The Loras College men's golf team resumes play at the Indianola Country Club today with the 2009 Iowa Conference Championships on the line.
The first two days of competition, last weekend at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa saw the Duhawks place themselves in very good spots at the halfway point. Loras is in third place, 13 strokes behind the leaders from Central College, and 12 strokes from second place Luther. They are five strokes ahead of Wartburg.
"I was most impressed with how the team played in terms of worrying only about their game and not what other teams were doing," head coach Denise Udelhofen said this week. "Conditions were warm, but the wind was brutal. The golfer's worst enemies can be the conditions and their own concentration, and we did well battling both. The guys have done a really good job of focusing so far."
Individually, the team has their top four scorers in the top 21 of the leaderboard. Junior Mark Dolphin (above) is in the hunt for the individual title in fourth place entering the final two rounds. He's three strokes behind Luther's Paul Soener. Andy Bischoff and John Kelly are tied for 11th place at the halfway point. Eric Drane dropped six strokes from round one to round two and is in 21st. Steve Stark's first round was a rough one, but the junior rebounded to climb to 32nd with an 80 in round two.
"Mark played smart, solid golf all weekend and Andy Bischoff has really come on at the end of the season here," Udelhofen added. "I'm looking forward to this weekend."
No one on the Loras roster had played the Indianola Country Club until Thursday's practice round, a part of the weekend equation that Udelhofen tabbed as one of the main factors in how well the Duhawks will fair this weekend.
The Duhawks finished in sixth place at the Iowa Conference Championships each of the last two seasons.
