Loras lead the entire game Saturday night in Cedar Rapids, defeating Coe 82-75.

 

The Duhawks jumped out to a quick lead 14-5 within the first 5 minutes of the game. The team went on several scoring runs in the first half forcing Coe to call 3 timeouts to try and kill the momentum. Loras lead 38-26 at the midway point.

 

It was a great defensive effort but the Duhawks, spearheaded by Aaron Schueller who took on the challenge of guarding IIAC Athlete of the Week: Andrew Wirth. Schueller, among the others that were placed on Wirth, held him to shooting 6-21 from the field, and 2-13 from deep.

 

To start the second half, Loras started another scoring run reaching their largest lead of the game at 17 points. The point differential would remain more or less in double digits until the final minute of the game. Coe, with some sharpshooting from 3-point land was able to crawl back to within 5.

 

Solid shooting from the free throw line would seal the win for the Duhawks. It also guaranteed them a home game for the first round of the IIAC tournament.

 

The Duhawks shot 25-52 (48%) from the field, 8-20 (40%) from beyond the arc, and 24-30 (80%) from the free throw line. Leading contributors for Loras were: Alex Cline (27pts, 11rebs), Ryan Coon (14pts, 12rebs, 4asts), and Luke Barry (11pts, 3rebs, 3asts).

 

With the win, Loras (15-10, 8-6) clinches the 3 seed for the conference tournament. They will host Luther (15-10, 7-7) Tuesday night at 7pm in the Athletic and Wellness Center.
