Loras 106

Buena Vista 100

Loras was finally able to get the monkey off their back Saturday night defeating Buena Vista University 106-100. It had been 11 games in a row that the Duhawks failed to defeat Buena Vista. That losing streak spanned back to the 2007-2008 season when the team defeated BV in the conference tournament championship to clinch a berth to the NCAA national tournament.

It was Senior Night at Loras, honoring three Duhawks: Alex Cline, Josh Bruns, and Ryan Coon.

It was a very fast paced game, with the teams scoring a combined 81 points at half, with the Duhawks trailing by 3. They quickly regained the lead after the start of the second half.

BV came right back with a run of their own and obtained their largest lead of the night with the score at 70-76. Loras charged back to tie the game at 78, the 15th of 17 ties throughout the game. The two teams went back and forth until about 2:30 left in the game. Senior Alex Cline hit a big 3-pointer that put the Duhawks back in the lead.

They would remain in the lead for the rest of the game thanks to another big 3 by Aaron Schueller that gave Loras a 5 point lead and helped them reach 100 points. Solid free throw shooting by Nathaniel Smith, going 6-6 in the final 30 seconds sealed the victory.

Loras shot 38-74 (51%) from the field, 7-22 (31%) from beyond the arc, and 23-25 (92%) from the free throw line. They also hauled in 40 rebounds, 11 of which came on the offensive end.

The Duhawks had 5 players record double digits in points: Nathaniel Smith (29pts, 7rebs, 8asts), Aaron Schueller (20pts, 4rebs, 4asts), Luke Barry (14pts, 2resbs), Mirko Grcic (12pts, 3rebs), Alex Cline (12pts, 2rebs).

With this win, the Duhawks (13-10, 6-6) clinch a spot in the Iowa Conference tournament. They currently are in 4th place and will face off with the Simpson Storm in the Athletic and Wellness Center at 8pm.
