Buena Vista 67
For the first time since January 8th the Duhawks were attempting to bounce back from a loss. Kaitlin Phillips (24 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assist) and Katie Langmeier (17 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) led the charge in Loras' 77-67 victory over the Beavers on Saturday.
Before the game the Duhawks recognized the careers of their seniors: Lauren Byrne, Katie Langmeier, and Katie Wheeler. Entering Saturday's Iowa Conference matchup against Buena Vista the trio of seniors had amassed 1,750 points, 1,236, rebounds, 334 steals, and 287 assists.
Senior day elevates the emotions of every team and Loras head coach Justin Heinzen was well aware of the challenge it could pose.
"It's important our seniors are recognized and applauded for their incredible contributions to the program no question, the game is still the game though and once the ball tipped, we didn't treat it any differently" Heinzen said.
Besides a change to the recent starting lineup that allowed all three seniors to start, the game went just as most Iowa Conference games have for the Duhawks.
Loras jumped out to a 13-6 lead early on before Buena Vista's offense got going.
With 10:15 to go in the half the Beavers held a two point advantage over the Duhawks amid a 6-0 run.
Kaitlin Phillips put an end to that as Maddie Bare found her for an open three-pointer. The basket gave the Duhawks a one point lead and erased the Beavers only lead of the game.
Phillips propelled the Duhawks, scoring 20 of her 24 points in the first half, to a 46-39 lead at halftime.
The Beavers contained Phillips for much of the second half but the patience and shot selection of the Duhawks carried them in the latter part of the game.
The Duhawks worked the ball around for the best shot in the second half, often times using most of the shot clock. This tactic helped to hold the top scoring team in the Iowa Conference to 14 points below their season average (81). It also led to 72% of the Duhawks baskets being made off an assist.
Buena Vista attempted to fight back but couldn't overcome the momentum of the Duhawks. After leading by as many as 14 in the second half, Loras went on to win, 77-67.
Loras moves to 16-7 (11-1) on the season with the win. With Simpson's loss to Coe, Loras also clinched at least share of the 2013-14 IIAC title.
The Simpson Storm come to town on Wednesday, tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
