Loras 58

Central 42

After posting a 7-1 record in the month of January, including a 7-0 start to the Iowa Conference schedule, the Duhawks traveled to Pella, Iowa on Saturday to take on the Central Dutch.

In the first meeting (a 71-63 Loras win), Central closed the game shooting over 50% from the field in the second half. Dutch guard, Kenzie Vander Molen scored 30 points against the Duhawk defense nearly leading Central to a comeback win.

The Duhawks knew that in order to escape Pella with a win, they would need a strong effort defensively to control Vander Molen in the rematch.

They managed to do just that holding Vander Molen to just 12 points and the Dutch to 29.3% shooting.

An early 2-2 tie was the closest the Dutch would get as the Duhawks maintained control throughout the contest.

Behind 12 first half points from sophomore Kaitlin Phillips and the bench chipping in 14, the Duhawks held a 36-22 lead at halftime.

Coming out of the half, Loras jumped out to a 48-26 lead with 13:47 left in the game.

Kathleen Cabrera and Victoria May paced the Duhawks in the second half with 6 points each. May also tallied 3 steals in the half.

With May leading the defensive charge, Loras held the Dutch to just 25% shooting in the half, while forcing them into 16 turnovers in the game.

Following a layup by Victoria May the Duhawks found themselves up 22 points, 52-30, once again with just over eight minutes left in regulation.

From that point on Loras powered themselves to a 58-42 victory over the Dutch.

Kaitlin Phillips led the Duhawks with 15 points. May added 10. All of the Duhawks hit the boards hard with five grabbing at least four rebounds.

The Dutch were led by Rachel Evans with 14 points.

Loras returns home to the AWC on Wednesday, February 5th to take on Luther College at 6:00 p.m.
