Loras 89

Wartburg 75

A season high shooting percentage (60.4%) led the Duhawks to their seventh consecutive victory on Wednesday night against the Knights of Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.

The Knight's took an early lead, 8-6, but the Duhawks controlled the game from that point on.

In the first half, the Duhawks shot 70% from the field and made 5 of 8 from long range. The hot shooting propelled them to a 21 point lead late in the first half.

After freshman Terese McMahon's layup gave the Duhawks their largest lead of the game, the Knights were forced to call a timeout with 2:24 to go before halftime.

The timeout proved to be just the spark the Knight's needed as they closed the half on a 10-2 run. Loras held a 13 point edge at the midpoint, leading 51-38.

The Duhawks opened the second half aggressively, forcing the Knights into five turnovers in the opening five minutes. The aggressive style of play rattled the Knights as they were awarded back to back technical fouls. Freshman Kathleen Cabrera made Wartburg pay and drained both sets of free throws to put the Duhawks up by 18 with 15:35 left in the game.

From there the Knights cut Loras' lead to eight but failed to get any closer. Loras went on to win the battle, 89-75 and maintain their hold of first place in the Iowa Conference.

Loras was led by the explosive play of Kathleen Cabrera (20 points, 4 assists). Three other Duhawks scored in double figures; Victoria May (15), Kaitlin Phillips (13), and Katie Langmeier (10). Langmeier posted yet another double-double with 11 rebounds.

Bobbi Burrows had a team high 23 points for the Knights.

With the victory, the Duhawks wrapped up the first half of the Iowa Conference season with a 7-0 record and sole possession of first place in the conference.

Next up for Loras, is a rematch with Central College at their place. The Duhawks travel to Pella, Iowa on Saturday with tip off scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
