Wartburg 90

Loras 89

Levick Arena (Waverly, IA) held host to a very intense game Wednesday evening. It took an extra 10 minutes of play to determine a winner between Loras and Wartburg; with the Knights holding on to a one-point victory, 90-89.

The Duhawks trailed a majority of the game, including a 41-33 halftime score. At half, Wartburg was shooting 59% from the field, including 4-of-7 from deep; compared to Loras' 38% and 6-of-12 from deep.

However, despite having at one time a 15 point deficit, Loras crawled back to take a 73-71 lead following a pair of Nathaniel Smith free throws with 27 seconds remaining in regulation. Wartburg's Eddie Diemer followed with two free throws on the other end with 12 seconds left. A Duhawk missed shot sent the game into overtime.

Loras scored first in OT with a bucket by Justin Schneider assisted by Bobby Harmening. Later in OT trailing 82-80, Nathaniel Smith pulled in an offensive rebound off of a missed 3-pointer and put it back up and in to tie the game at 82 with 6 seconds still on the clock. A possession of lock down defense by the Duhawks sent the game into an additional overtime.

Wartburg jumped out to a four point lead that was cut quickly to 86-85 following a three by Alex Cline. Soon after his first three, Cline, would hit another three to take the lead at 89-88. With 15 seconds left, Wartburg's Jordan Cameron hit a difficult layup in traffic to take the lead for the Knights. Loras inbounded the ball and ran a play until three seconds were left on the clock, where they were forced to call a timeout to avoid a jump ball. Inbounding underneath the basket, they got the ball to Bobby Harmening in the corner, where he put up a three but was unsuccessful.

Loras finished shooting 30-of-75 (40%) from the field, 14-of-28 (50%) from deep, and 15-of-22 (68%) from the line. Lead contributors for the Duhawks were: Alex Cline (23pts, 5rebs), Aaron Schueller (18pts, 8rebs), Nathaniel Smith (15pts, 9rebs, 5asts).

Wartburg had four players in double figures. The Knights were led Eddie Diemer scored 24 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

Loras (11-7, 4-3) continues play on Saturday, traveling to Pella, IA to face off with Central. The game tips off at 4pm.
