Loras hosted their cross town rivals the University of Dubuque on Saturday night. The Duhawks defeated the Spartans 76-66 improving their record to 11-6 (4-2) and giving the #25 Spartans their first loss of the season. 

 

Loras was able to build its led in the first half to as much as eight points before the Spartans knocked down a couple three pointers to cut down the deficit right before halftime. The Duhawks took a 37-34 lead into the break.

 

Loras in the second half relied on attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line. The Duhawks hit 16-of-20 from the line in the half and finished the game hitting on 6-of-6 free throws within the last minute.

 

Dubuque native Aaron Schueller led the way for the Duhawks. Schueller scored 25 shooting on 8-of-10 for the game and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Senior's Alex Cline and Ryan Coon also finished with double figures. Cline had 10 points and eight rebounds. Coon finished with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists.

 

The Duhawks defense was the key to the game. They were able to hold the Spartans to just 66 points on 37% shooting. Those numbers were far below the University of Dubuque's averages for the season. Loras also forced UD into 13 turnovers.

 

Co-Captain Nathaniel Smith stated "We came in with a game plan and executed it exactly how we needed too. Everyone was ready to play from the tip and I believe it showed in our effort throughout the game. Every guy who played contributed to our victory tonight."

 

Smith also added "Oh and we got a kid named Aaron Schueller, who had one heck of a game."

 

The Duhawks now are tied for second place in the conference and travel to play Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa on Wednesday, January 29th at 8:00 pm.
