Duhawks improve record to 10-5 (3-1)

Loras hosted the Central Dutch on Saturday both teams came into the day with a 2-1 record in IIAC competition. The Duhawks were able to improve their record to 10-5 (3-1) on a 70-60 win over the Dutch.

 

Both teams started off slow offensively while the battle remained tight for most of the first half. Loras was eventually able to build its lead to eight with a little over five minutes remaining but Central hit a 3-pointer and converted on an and one to help cut the led to 28-27 at halftime.

 

The Duhawks were than able to gain some control coming out of the half with a 3-pointer by Aaron Schueller. Also the help of the bench in the first eight minutes of the second half gave the team a lift. Loras was able to build its lead to 12 on a Nathaniel Smith lay-up which gave them their biggest lead of the game.

 

Bobby Harmening finished out the game strong by hitting 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the last two minutes.

 

Loras' bench came up in a big way again contributing 22 points and holding the Dutch bench to just 11 points for the game. Defensively, Loras held the Dutch to 33.8% shooting from the field while shooting 44.2% themselves.

 

Junior Aaron Schueller continues his hot shooting, hitting on 6-of-9 from the field and a 3-of-4 effort from deep, scoring 15 points. Mirko Grcic tallied 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds off the bench. Captain, Nathaniel Smith scored 11 points, added four rebounds, and had four assist. The Duhawks also got 9 points apiece from Alex Cline and Bobby Harmening.

 

The Duhawks travel to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa on Wednesday, January 22nd at 8:00 p.m.
