Loras 71

Central 63

The Duhawks took down Central College, 71-63, at home on Saturday to maintain their share of first place in the Iowa Conference.

Loras controlled much of the first half leading by as many as 14 before heading into halftime with a 31-20 edge over Central.

The Duhawks used their size and strength inside to outscore the Dutch 18-4 in the paint. While the Loras bench continued to be productive tallying 10 points in the first half.

The Dutch came out strong in the second half, cutting Loras' lead down to one. However, timely plays on the defensive side of the ball brought the momentum back to the Duhawks giving them their biggest lead of the game, 61-42.

From that point on the Duhawks controlled the game, never leading by less than 5 points. Strong free throw shooting over the last few minutes propelled Loras to victory, 71-63, despite strong performance by the Dutch's Kenzie Vander Molen.

Vander Molen led the Dutch with 30 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

The balance and depth of the Duhawks was on display again, with every Duhawk that entered the game scoring.

Senior Katie Langmeier led the Duhawks with 16 points and 9 rebounds.

Sophomore Kaitlin Phillips continued to improve upon the season as she added 15 points, 3 assists, and 1 steal.

Head coach Justin Heinzen was happy with the play of Phillips thus far but knows there is more to come.

"Kaitlin is progressing and making better decisions each game.  She does a lot for our tempo and our offense. I still think her best basketball is coming" Heinzen said.

The Duhawks travel to Luther College in Decorah, Iowa on Wednesday, January 22nd at 6:00 p.m.
