The Duhawks women's basketball team moved to 2-0 in the Iowa Conference with a win over the Buena Vista Beavers on Saturday night in Storm Lake, Iowa. The win gave Duhawk head coach, Justin Heinzen his 100th victory as leader of the Duhawks.

Buena Vista held control early on, jumping out to an 8-2 lead (their only lead of the game) over the Duhawks. Loras battled back stringing together a 26-10 run, giving them a 28-18 lead with 6:46 left in the first half.

The Beavers battled back to tie the game at 34 on a 3-pointer by Susan Kies with under 3 minutes left in the half.

The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the half, with Loras taking a 41-40 lead into halftime.

The second half started out much like the first half ended, with the teams trading baskets. That was until Duhawk teammates Kaitlin and Naomi Phillips connected on a few baskets giving Loras a 58-50 lead with just over 10 minutes to go in regulation.

The resilient Beavers continued to fight back eventually tying the game for the eighth time at 65 apiece with 5 minutes to play forcing Loras head coach Justin Heinzen to call a timeout.

The timeout proved to be just what the Duhawks needed. Victoria May ripped down an offensive rebound and put it right back up, making the layup and earning an opportunity for a 3-point play. May sank the free throw putting the Duhawks up 68-65 with 4:34 to go.

Susan Kies pulled the Beavers within one but failed to take the lead. The strong free throw shooting of the Duhawks proved to be the difference. Loras shot 12-15 from the stripe in the final 5 minutes helping them to an 83-79 win over Buena Vista.

Loras' bench outscored the Beavers, 30-12, showcasing the depth of the Duhawks.

The Duhawks were led by freshman Naomi Phillips who scored 18 points while coming off the bench. The freshman shot 80% from beyond the arc, making a career-high 4 3-pointers.

Kaitlin Phillips added 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists for the Duhawks. Victoria May chipped in 11 points and seniors Lauren Byrne and Katie Langmeier each added 10.

Buena Vista was led by Susan Kies (22 points, 6 asssits) and Lexi Fisher (16 points, 5 rebounds).

The win moves the Duhawks to 2-0 in IIAC play and 7-6 overall.
