Women take first IIAC road contest at Simpson

The Loras College women's basketball team won a nail biter against the Simpson Storm in a 55-54 battle on Wedneday night. Loras is now 6-6 overall, 1-0 in the Iowa Conference after the victory. It's marks the first time Loras has won in Indianola since the 2004-05 season.

 

Loras struggled early in the game letting Simpson build a seven point lead in the first five minutes, but eventually the Duhawks took the lead on a Katie Langmeier layup with just under 11 minutes to go in the first half. The Duhawks were able to build their own lead up to 11 before going into the break. Simpson on a 17-2 run to start the second half and help them regain the lead with over 12 minutes to play. Much of the second half was a close battle having four lead changes and 3 ties throughout the period. Kathleen Cabrera and Katie Wheeler both converted on key free throws with less than 15 seconds left to help Loras edge out the Storm.

 

The Duhawks were led by Victoria May who scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Senior captain Katie Langmeier was able to contribute 11 points and nine rebounds. Also chipping into the Loras victory was Lauren Byrne and Naomi Phillips who had 9 points and 8 points respectively.

 

"I thought we were resilient tonight," head coach Justin Heinzen said after the win. "Vic(toria) and Katie were big when we needed them to be and I thought we were very good on the boards. Naomi hit a couple of big threes, and our defense is moving in the right direction."

 

Loras will visit Buena Vista Saturday January 11th before returning home to face Coe January 15th and Central on January 18th in back-to-back home games.
