The Duhawks opened up IIAC play against the Simpson Storm in Indianola on Wednesday. Loras prevailed with an 86-65 victory moving their record to 8-4. The win is the Duhawks' first in a league opener since the 2009-10 season.

 

Loras came out flat while the Storm hit on all cylinders building its lead to as many as 15 points with just under 14 minutes remaining in the first half. Aaron Schueller and Alex Cline were both able to knock down three straight three pointers, two of which came from Cline, with just over four minutes to go in the half.

 

After taking a 41-36 lead into half, the Duhawks came out of the halftime break strong. Loras was able to eventually increase its lead to double digits as early as two minutes into the second half and never looked back from there.

 

Loras was led by five players scoring in double figures. Junior Aaron Schueller led the quintuplet of Loras players netting 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting to go along with 3-of-4 from 3-point range. Ryan Coon also contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds on 6-of-9 shooting while also adding two blocked shots to his stat column. Senior Alex Cline and Sophomore Mirko Grcic also finished with 13 points each. The final player in double figures was Bobby Harmening who tallied 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and hitting 2-of-2 from long range.

 

The Duhawks bench contributed again in a large way scoring 31 points while the Storm bench only provided 19 points. Loras shot 51.7% from the floor converting on 30-of-58 field goals while holding Simpson to just 36.9% shooting. Loras connected on 18-of-20 free throws, hitting at a 90% rate as a team.

 

Loras will make one final road trip - their seventh in a row -  to Buena Vista Saturday, January 11th before finally returning home against Coe College on Wednesday.
