Duhawks second among full field in Pioneer Classic

RESULTS – Loras 2nd/13


The Loras College women's swimming team was in Grinnell, Iowa over the weekend to compete in Grinnell's Pioneer Classic. The team finished second overall in the team standings and won several events, including relays. 


Leading the way for the Duhawks was junior Mary Kathryn Maher. Maher won the 200 Yard Backstroke by three seconds in 2:13.76. She also won the 500 Yard Freestyle event in 5:23.05 (tied a Grinnell swimmer) by four seconds over third place. Maher added a fourth place finish in the 400 IM and a third place finish in the 200 Yard Freestyle to her productive weekend.


Lexie Mollahan also won an individual event, the 100 Yard Breaststroke. She topped teammate Clare Ehlbeck by two seconds in 1:09.22. Mollahan was also runner-up in the 200 Yard Breaststroke event by less than a half a second in 2:32.80 and third in the 200 IM in 2:16.29.


Katie Callaghan was also third in the 200 Yard Butterfly in 2:21.78.


In the relays, the 400 Yard Medley Relay team of Maher, Mollahan, Callaghan, and Jillyn Gerken were over three seconds faster than the runner up and took 48 team points with their 4:09.99. The 800 Yard Freestyle Relay team was second (8:20.53). That group included Maher, Mollahan, Heather Black, and Evayn Roper. The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team was also second. Mollahan, Maher, Black, and Gerken were finished in 3:46.59.


As the first leg of the 400 Medley Relay team's win, Maher also set the school record in the 100 Yard Backstroke when she needed just 1:02.32 for her leg.


Next up for the Duhawks is their annual training trip to Florida. They'll return to face conference rival Luther in San Jose Pool on January 4.
