The Loras College wrestling team continued their early season open tournament action last weekend in Mequon, Wisconsin at the Concordia Open. A pair of Duhawks won five matches, and six others won at least twice.

Leading the way for Loras was sophomore Nick Steger, who swept through the 141-pound bracket. Steger won four decisions and one tech fall on his way to the title, defeating wrestlers from Stevens Point, Wartburg (2), and Wabash (2). Steven DeWitt also won five times. He won his first three bouts (two by pinning his opponent) before losing to the eventual champion in the semifinals. He bounced back with two decisions in the wrestle-backs to take third place.

Other Duhawks who won multiple matches in Wisconsin were Rudy Johnson and Colin Griffin who each won three times. Johnson was sixth in the 133-pound bracket. Ronnie Triche at 125-pounds (2-2), Dearion Stokes at 133-pounds (2-2), and Paul Okeke at heavyweight (2-2) did not place but each won twice.

"I felt like we had a solid performance," head coach Randy Steward said after the tournament.

"Nick Steger is starting to open up and had a very solid day winning his weight class. Steven DeWitt really made some progress and wrestled like I want him to in his third place match. It was encouraging  to see how he responded and performed after a tough loss."

"The goal of going to opens is to get a large number of kids mat experience," Steward continued. "We are talking a lot about being competitive across the board…every single kid in this program…being competitive. To us, that means staying in matches even if you are outmatched. I want everyone to win matches – that will help elevate the level of competition in our practice room. I feel like we are improving each week."
