Duhawks fall short in season opener
Mon, Nov. 18, 2013 - [Men's Basketball]

Rockford, 89

Loras, 84

The Rockford University Regents spoiled the season opener for the Loras College men's basketball team on Friday night at the Seaver Center in Rockford, Illinois.

Loras found themselves down 44-39 at the end of the first half. The visitors fell behind in the middle portion of the opening 20 minutes but made a late run to get within five points. Despite a strong second half performance in which the Duhawks played the Regents even (each team score 45 points) the five point differential would prove to be the difference as Loras fell 89-84.

The Regents used strong shooting performances from Torry Minnifield (23 points) and David Dixon (30 points) to overcome the balanced attack of the Duhawks.

Loras had four players score in double figures in the game. Juniors Aaron Schueller and Nathaniel Smith led the charge for the Duhawks. Schueller had a team-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Smith chipped in 16 points and 5 assists.

Senior Alex Cline added 11 points and sophomore Mirko Grcic scored 10.

Up next for the Duhawks is #5 Wheaton College. The Duhawks welcome the Thunder to the Athletic and Wellness Center on Tuesday, November 19th with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m.
