Wartburg, 59

Loras, 3

The Loras College Duhawks finished the 2013 football season against the Wartburg Knights on Saturday afternoon in the Rock Bowl. Prior to the game, the team recognized their 12 seniors in a brief ceremony. Both that ceremony and kickoff were delayed by a brief spot of thunderstorms.

The Knights had the IIAC championship on the line and came out ready to play. Loras fell behind as the Knights scored on all of their possessions in the first two quarters. Louie Oswald was able to get the Duhawks on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 23-yard field goal on an eight play, 74-yard drive. Calvin Smith and Tom Zoeckler each made key plays on the drive, helping the Duhawks into the red zone.

In the second half, after another short weather delay during the break, the Knights added three more touchdowns giving them the 59-3 victory over the Duhawks. The Knights claimed the IIAC title with the victory.

The Loras offense was carried by senior Calvin Smith. He carried the football 25 times for 129 yards, including the long run of 45 yards on Loras' scoring drive in the second quarter. Tom Zoeckler was the leading receiver for the Duhawks with 2 catches for 27 yards.

Defensively, leading the way were Logan Kuehl and Calvin Harridge with 11 tackles each. JP Awe and Dave Pirkle also contributed 10 and 6 tackles respectively. Senior Nick Nunley punted for his final time as a Duhawk. He had a total of 280 yards on seven punts with an average of 40 yards per attempt and one pinned inside the Wartburg 20 yard line.

Brendan Oates, Louie Oswald, Mike Canevello, Kyle Bergquist, Nick Nunley, Ben Savory, Calvin Smith, Tim Weber, Chris Sullivan, Dan Murray, Cole Smith, and Jordan Pontius each played their final games as Duhawks on Saturday.
