Duhawks’ season comes to an end with loss at Coe

Loras fell to Coe 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-18) in the Iowa Conference semifinal match Thursday night at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.


Coe jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in set one forcing Duhawk head coach, Jenna Ness, to call a timeout. That timeout proved to be timely as Loras went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 8-8, forcing the Kohawks to call a timeout. Coe then went on a 7-2 run of their own to take a 15-10 lead. From there, the the Kohawks never looked back closing out the set on a 10-3 run to take set 1, 25-13.


The second set was controlled by Coe from the start. Leading 11-5, the Kohawks balanced offensive attack got the best of the Duhawks as they strung together a 14-4 run to close the set and take a 2-0 lead.


With their backs against the wall, and their season on the line, the Duhawks came out with extra intensity in the third set. The Duhawks forced Coe to call at timeout with the score tied at 10. Out of the timeout, Loras went on to take a 16-15 lead forcing the Kohawks to take another timeout. Unfortunately for the Duhawks, this timeout turned the set around. Coe closed the match on a 10-2 run to end the Duhawks' season.


Danielle Kennedy had a team-high 8 kills for the Duhawks. Micaela Mertens made the start at libero for the second straight game. She led the team with 16 digs. Grant contributed 5 kills and 8 digs in the match.  


With the season coming to an end, Duhawks coach Jenna Ness is optimistic for the future of her you squad. "I think we got better every day and that is important," she said. "I think we have a good baseline, and only look to improve. I'm excited to see where this young squad can go next year."


Loras finishes the season 15-17 (4-3). Coe (33-4, 6-1) advanced to play Wartburg in the Iowa Conference championship Saturday, November 9th at 7:00pm in Waverly, Iowa.
