Loras sweeps Simpson in IIAC first round matchup

The Loras College volleyball team swept the Simpson College Storm in the opening round of the Iowa Conference Tournament 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-17) on Tuesday night in the AWC.  The Duhawks were the #3 seed after going 4-3 in the IIAC and the Storm were the #6 seed after going 2-5. 


The Duhawks took charge from the start jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the first set and never looked back. They went on to win the set 25-13 thanks to a .250 hitting percentage and eight errors by the Storm.


In the second set, the Duhawks and Storm battled back and forth. Simpson jumped out to a 20-16 lead late, forcing Loras and head coach Jenna Ness to call a timeout. Big serves by Courtney Boyd and Danielle Kennedy gave Loras a 22-21 edge before closing out the set 25-22.


The third set was again controlled by the Duhawks. They hit a consistent .320 over the final set and left little doubt in the minds of the fans who showed up to cheer them on. In the end, it was Therese Schultz with the match-clinching kill to give the Duhawks a 25-17 win.


Kara Grant led the Duhawks with nine kills and eight digs. Tara Blake added seven kills, 10 assists and seven digs. Micaela Mertens logged 13 digs, many off-balance and with a full stretch, to lead the Loras defense. Jenna Erickson was the primary setter on the night and had a team-high 14 assists.


Loras advances to face #2 seed Coe College in the Iowa Conference semifinals on Thursday in Cedar Rapids, IA. The Kohawks won the regular season matchup in the AWC, 3-0. A year ago, Loras went to Cedar Rapids as the #3 seed and defeated the #2 seed Kohawks. You can watch the match live online through GameCentral at 7:00 PM.
