#28 Duhawks race to second place at IIAC Championship
Sun, Nov. 3, 2013 - [Men's Cross Country]

Loras 2nd/8 (53 Points)

Only the hosts from Central College – running on their home course – were able to post a lower score than the Duhawks on Saturday at the Iowa Conference Championship. Loras outran six other squads on their way to their 53 points, including the Norse from Luther who were a few slots ahead of the Duhawks in the most recent USTFCCCA poll.

"A second place slot for us is where I think we should be," head coach Bob Schultz said after the race. "Central was going to be tough to beat today on their home course. That being said, I very much believe we are capable of more. We've got the potential to do well and regionals, and I think our guys are excited to try and run their best on the same day (at St. Olaf)."

Saturday's performances were led by Sam Whan, who finished fifth overall in 25:33. Not far behind was Ty Wittman – Loras' top finisher at this race a year ago – in 25:44. Steve Loran and Rob Howe joined those two on the All-Iowa Conference stand with their 11th and 13th place spots. JP Sevcik was Loras' final scoring runner in 17th. He was a few steps ahead of Ryan Sheeran, who was 18th, just three seconds behind. Mark Chapman, the lone senior in Loras' top seven, was 28th overall in 27:04.

"I was happy to see (Ryan) Sheeran up after being a little further back and to see Rob (Howe) earn his first all-conference spot in cross country after two appearances with the track team," Schultz said. "Now it is time to get ready for regionals."

The Duhawks will be at St. Olaf in Northfield, Minnesota on November 16 for the NCAA Division III Central Region Championship looking to qualify for nationals.
