The Loras College wrestling team has named assistant coach Ryan Birt Associate head coach ahead of the 2013-14 season. Birt is entering his fourth season with Loras College

"I felt it was important to reward Ryan for his hard work and make sure everyone understands how important he is to what we are trying to do with our program," head coach Randy Steward said about the move. "Coach Birt has proven to be a capable coach who makes our wrestlers better and can help us get to the highest possible level. We want a championship atmosphere every day and he (Ryan) puts us in a position to do that."

Now-sophomore heavyweight James Buss has noted that Birt – who was a national champion and IIAC Wrestler of the Year at Upper Iowa –has had a big role in his development in his first season.

"The landscape of college athletics and Division III wrestling has changed in my 20 years in this position. Ryan brings a fresh approach that matches our recently upgraded locker room and wrestling rooms," Steward added.

Two summers ago, Birt was one of the first attendees at the National Wrestling Coaches' Association's Leadership Academy.

Birt has also moved down the main hallway of the Graber Sports Center offices on the lower level .

The wrestling season officially begins on October 10. The Duhawks will once again host their annual Loras Open to begin the season on November 9 at Five Flags in downtown Dubuque.
