Dubuque, 2

The Loras College women's soccer team opened the IIAC slate on the road on Saturday at the University of Dubuque. The teams battled through soggy conditions on the natural grass at Oyen Field and traded punches over the first 90 minutes. Loras opened three separate leads, the final of which came 31 seconds into double overtime for the win.

The Duhawks were out of the gates quickly with Danielle Vujovic's goal just after the six minute mark of the first half. Loras held a 7-2 advantage in total shots and kept the Spartans at a safe distance over the first 45 minutes. Hannah Wilson wasn't required to make a save in the first half and Loras took their 1-0 lead into the break.

The second half action of note was packed into a ten minute stretch just after an hour had been played. The Spartans equalized for the first time of the afternoon from the penalty spot. Alexandra Watkins converted four minutes before Lynn DeVriese reclaimed the lead for the Duhawks. Five minutes after that, the Spartans were back even at 2-2 when a free kick from long distance found the back of the net.

The Duhawks took four more shots over the final 20 minutes of regulation, but would need a little more time before netting the game-winner. The Duhawks were close at the end of the first overtime session when Ailish Rispin turned quickly and smacked a ball off the post.

The wait was over just 31 seconds into overtime when Madeline Tennant crossed a ball in front of the Dubuque goal which Spartans goalkeeper Tiffany Duncan couldn't hold on to. Madi Avery was first to the loose ball, knocking in the game-winner. It was Avery's first collegiate goal and put the Duhawks atop the IIAC with a 1-0 start.

Loras will host Simpson College at 5:00 PM on Tuesday night in the Rock Bowl.
