No seniors. No problem?

That seems to be the mentality of the small but determined roster of the Loras College women's golf team and first year head coach Lynsey Barnard.

"Attitudes have been incredibly positive thus far both in practice and in tournament play," Barnard said earlier this season.

"This part of the game can be a huge battle for golfers, but we seem to be doing really well with it so far."

Former All-Iowa Conference golfer Abby Potts has graduated and junior Lauren Gonner represents the veteran experience with the most college rounds under her belt. Lo and behold, she will have to wait until 2014 to swing a club competitively. Her recovery from a summer surgery has had some setbacks, putting the focus solely on the five remaining names on the roster.

Mara Simonson is the only other player on the roster to compete in the IIAC Championship a year ago. Dana Matykiewicz played four rounds a year ago and already has five under her belt as a sophomore.

"The small numbers have made it easy to be a tight-knit team," Barnard says, "and the returners have been a great example of what being a Duhawk is all about."

The first three weeks of September go by quickly, and the league championship looms just around the corner on September 27. The team has seen an improvement in scores both individually and collectively at the midway point of the fall season.

"Our small roster isn't an excuse to not have high expectations," Barnard declared.

"Mara has a ton of potential and has been consistent. Dana has an advantage that a lot of golfers don't with her distance off the tee. The younger players will need a few rounds to get over the jitters, but they all have positives in their games."

The Duhawks had their best round of the fall at the rain-shortened Benedictine Invite last weekend, where Mara Simonson finished fifth. Her 81 was good enough for a small trophy on the way out the door at St. Andrews.

Now the Duhawks turn their attention to the Millikin Invite this weekend before the four-round IIAC test in late September and early October.
