The Loras College women's cross country team opened their 2013 season with a trip to Pella, Iowa – site of the 2013 IIAC Championships – on Saturday morning. The Duhawks won the team title with each of the top seven runners finishing in the top 12, and the five scoring runners in the top eight for a 22-point team total.

 

Maggie Saenz Ruiz was the individual champion among the 61 entrants on Saturday. A native of Bogota, Colombia she was running her first cross country race. Ever. Saenz Ruiz spent some of last fall with the Duhawk soccer team before joining the track teams as her first academic year progressed.

 

She was the only racer to break 24 minutes on Saturday, finishing the course in 23:45.

 

Mary Rector was next to the finish line taking home second place honors behind Saenz Ruiz. She finished in 24:03. Bri Cook, Kellie Wagner, and Becky Hilby rounded out Loras' top five. Bridget Hall and Lindsey Gidel were sixth and seventh for Loras in ninth and twelfth place.

 

The Duhawks will return to their training regimen over the next two weeks as they prepare for their annual trip to the University of Notre Dame's National Catholic Championships on September 20.
