PREVIEWING: USTFCCCA Central Region #4 Loras College Men's Cross Country
Fri, Sep. 6, 2013 - [Men's Cross Country]

The 2013 Loras College men's cross country team will have five of the top seven runners from a year ago back, including a nucleus of four juniors. They'll be fighting for the Iowa Conference title that has been claimed by three different teams over the last three seasons, including the Duhawks in 2011.

That nucleus is comprised of Steve Loran, Ty Wittman, Ryan Sheeran, and Rob Howe. They made up four of the Duhawks' top five slots on the fifth place team from the NCAA Division III Central Region Championship a year ago. That squad also included now-departed seniors Austin Steil and Chris Higgins.

Wittman, Loran, and Sheeran each made the All-Iowa Conference cut in 2012 as sophomores.

Sam Whan and JP Sevcik headline this year's sophomore class.

"Austin was a tremendous leader and earned All-Iowa Conference honors multiple times," Schultz pointed out when comparing last year's team to this one.

"We have a great group back," Schultz quickly pointed out.

"We're healthy and I am very happy with where our team came into the season fitness-wise."

With a large group of returners (18 total- 2 seniors, 10 juniors, 6 sophomores), Schultz noted it will be a tall task to crack the top seven for a newcomer. But he's also happy with that group of eight young men. Ben Hedges and Tim Wittman are among the new faces who have the potential to contribute.

"Our focus remains on the final meets of the season; the Dr. Tucker Invite, the IIAC Championships, and then regionals and nationals."
