PREVIEWING: Loras College Women's Cross Country
Fri, Sep. 6, 2013 - [Women's Cross Country]

The 2013 Loras College women's cross country team will look to build on their third place finish in the IIAC and seventeenth place effort at regionals beginning Saturday morning in Pella, Iowa. Central College will host this weekend's event and the 2013 IIAC Cross Country Championships.

"We return five of our top seven runners from 2012 and we're healthy," head coach Bob Schultz said this week. "I like where we're at for the first week of September and I like the fitness level I've seen so far from the team."

Lost to graduation are Maria Kalb and Katie Flogel. Kalb's All-Iowa Conference times and Flogel's leadership are at the top of the list of things lost when Schultz looks at this roster. The duo were the team's fourth and fifth place spots at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championship a year ago.

Among the five returners, Schultz points to Nora Gawlik, Mary Rector, and Kellie Wagner – his top three finishers at regionals – to lead this year's squad. Rector and Wagner are half of the senior representation on the 2013 roster. Bridget Hall and Ashley Miller are the other half. Hall "is in great shape" according to Schultz.

Bri Cook, Kristi Shogren, and Maggie Saenz Ruiz (6th in the IIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships 10K) have also run well prior to the start of the 2013 season.

"I am confident we will be a better team this year," Schultz said.

"Our focus remains on the final meets of the season; the Dr. Tucker Invite, the IIAC Championships, and then regionals and nationals."
