#2 Duhawks go 1-0-1 at Advantage Emblem Cup
Tue, Sep. 3, 2013 - [Men's Soccer]

Loras, 2 – St. Scholastica, 1

Loras, 1 – UW-Superior, 1 (OT)

The Loras College men's soccer team began their 2013 season with a win and a draw at the 2013 Advantage Emblem Cup in northern Minnesota this weekend. Loras scored all three of their goals in the second half on the weekend.

The weekend started with a come-from-behind 2-1 win at St. Scholastica – who was in the Rock Bowl to start last year's NCAA Division III tournament. It was the Saints who scored first to start the 2013 season, putting their one and only shot on goal of the game in to open the scoring in the 29th minute.

The Saints took that lead into the locker room, despite being outshot 12-4 in the first 45 minutes.

Loras remained on the attack over the final 45 minutes to the tune of 14 more shots (eight on goal) and broke through just 1:40 into the second half. Johnny Rummelhart had the final touch as the ball beat the St. Scholastica goalkeeper and tie the game. The Saints took two shots in the second half but were finished on the scoreboard after Tom Corcoran's effort.

The difference came in the 79th minute when Chris Paulino fed Tim van den Bergh a pass for the game-winning goal. It came just a few minutes after he forced a save from the St. Scholastica goalkeeper. The Saints' lone shot over the final 10 minutes was high.

Loras took on UW-Superior on Saturday and nearly took their first loss of the season after another shot-heavy performance. Loras held a 21-6 shot advantage in this contest, requiring five saves of Matt Elder.

Superior opened the scoring on one of their two shots on frame of the day. This one was a penalty kick in the 51st minute following a Mitch Burgmeier yellow card. Loras had a spot kick chance of their own 15 minutes later, but Elder kept out the van den Bergh effort. It appeared that was going to be enough, but with 45 seconds to play, Tom Fluegel took a corner kick that found Pat Langan on the doorstep.

Things were all knotted up at one when Mother Nature took control shortly after Langan's goal, ending the overtime session before it ever really got going.

Loras returns home 1-0-1 and will play UW-Platteville in the Rock Bowl on Tuesday night. The teams split last year's contests, with the Pioneers winning in Wisconsin before coming to the Rock Bowl in the NCAA tournament and losing. The final score of both contests were 2-1. Kickoff is 7:00 PM.
