PREVIEWING: Loras College Menís Golf
Mon, Sep. 2, 2013 - [Men's Golf]

"I feel like our team is on the right path and we are looking forward to competing against the best very soon."

This is the approach head men's golf coach Buddy Sodemann is taking into 2013 with his young Duhawk roster in his first season in charge.

The first test will be tomorrow at The Meadows when the Duhawks host the season opening event for a handful of teams in Asbury, Iowa. It will be the first test in quite some time without former IIAC medalist and All-America Academic team member  Sam Herrmann.

Junior Austin Miller played three rounds a year ago for the Duhawks and is the only upperclassman back on the 2013 team. He was +9 over those three rounds.

Jon Nugent and Logan Bahl were the two freshman to card 10 or more total rounds a year ago. Four other players logged five or more rounds – Ben Suchomski, Nick Maritini, Jimmy Gallery, and Jason Beer. When you throw in the four freshman added to the roster to go with those seven returners, competition for a spot on the tournament-day roster will be high.

"The competition for qualifying spots is intense and it is bringing the best out of all of our players," Sodemann says. "We have a roster full of guys that are capable of going low on any given day."

"We are an extremely young team." Sodemann admits. "I hope that the experiences they (Miller and the now-sophomores) gained from the previous year will help them this coming season."

"Our guys are hungry to take the next step and show what they are capable of doing," says Coach Sodemann. "We have had some low scores posted in our first weeks of practice and I am please with the effort and focus our players have shown."

The team will play four tournaments this fall beginning with tomorrow's Loras College Fall Inviational. The huge Midwest Collegiate event in the Wisconsin Dells will offer a measuring stick for the team. The first weekend in April is the other home event for Loras. The IIAC Championships are the final weekend of April (Finkbine) and the first weekend in May (Dubuque Golf and CC).
