Duhawks go 0-3-1 at IIAC Duals

The Loras College wrestling team made four consecutive appearances on the mats at the Iowa Conference Duals hosted by Cornell College on Saturday. Buena Vista, Central, and Luther joined Loras and the Rams for the five team event. Below is a brief summary of each contest.

Loras 21 - Buena Vista 21

Matt Holmes (Tech Fall at 141#), Colin Hagerty (Major at 149#), Mitch Gansen (WBF at 157#), and Jeremy Klein (WBF at 285#) prevailed in convincing fashion for the Duhawks in the first dual of the day. Loras' forfeit at 133# had the Duhawks trailing 21-15 headed into the heavyweight match. A second period pin by Klein pushed the Duhawks even at 21-21 for the rare tie, and kept them out of the loss column.

Central 26 - Loras 15

Pat Pfantz rallied all the way back from a double digit deficit to force overtime in the first match at 125# before eventually winning moments into the sudden victory period. Loras wouldn't tally any points until Mike Calafiore's pin at 157# with just seconds remaining in the match. Jeremy Klein again provided six team points in the final match, sticking Jacob Crawford of the Dutch at 4:52.

#10 Cornell 40 - Loras 3

The host Rams won the first nine matches at the Small Multi-Sports Center to earn the win. Jeremy Klein battled his way to a 7-5 victory in the final match to move to 3-0 on the day. Pat Pfantz and Matt Holmes also fought hard early in the contest, but lost decisions at 125# and 141#. The NWCA #10 Cornell lineup included two ranked wrestlers.

Luther 37 - Loras 6

Loras fell behind early in the match, but earned points with two Duhawks later in the dual. Matt Dickman looked strong in his 8-3 win at 174#. Alex Grafft and Jack Steinberg were scoreless for two periods before the Cedar Rapids native Grafft broke free from his down position early in the final period and went on to win 2-0. Jeremy Klein was kept from a perfect 4-0 day when he was pinned late in the heavyweight match. Klein posted a Loras-high three wins on the day.
